Twin joy for Sarah Jessica Parker, Matthew Broderick

LOS ANGELES (AFP) – Sarah Jessica Parker and husband Matthew Broderick are expecting twin girls born to a surrogate, according to People magazine.

"Sex and the City" star Parker, 44, and actor husband Broderick, 47, already have a six-year-old son together, James Wilkie.

People quoted a representative as saying the couple were "happily anticipating the birth of their twin daughters later this summer with the generous help of a surrogate. The entire family is overjoyed."

Broderick and Parker married in 1997.

MTV bets on British model for daily culture show

NEW YORK – MTV has been without a show that has defined pop culture since the demise of "Total Request Live" and is betting on a 25-year-old British model who dates a rock star to help fill that void.

"The Alexa Chung Show" will be a mix of celebrity talk, music and online interaction with viewers. The stakes are high; it's the most important of nine new series the slumping MTV has in the works. The midday series begins June 15.

MTV's viewership for the first three months of 2009 is down 18 percent from the year before. The docu-soap "The Hills" is still popular, and MTV is generating modest heat with the competition "America's Best Dance Crew," but it has lacked the daily stop-off point for stars that "TRL" provided before its slow demise and cancellation last November.

At its height, during the 'N Sync and Britney Spears years, "TRL" set the tone for the music business and drew huge crowds to MTV's Times Square studio.

Chung, who has been on TV shows since she was 18 and now dates Arctic Monkeys singer Alex Turner, is a fresh face able to relate to both stars and the audience at home, network executives said.

"We just all really fell for her," said David Sirulnick, MTV's executive vice president for news and production.

The idea is to introduce Chung's show at midday for young viewers home for the summer and, if it works out well, move later to an after-school time slot.

Facebook is working with MTV as a partner in the series. MTV wants to use Facebook and Twitter to reach viewers in a way that "TRL" — which asked viewers to vote on their favorite videos — could barely touch upon.

"The show will air one hour a day," Sirulnick said. "but for the other 23 hours we want viewers to be engaged with Alexa and what is on the show."

Sirulnick said MTV has been searching for the last few years for someone to build a show around.

MTV is going against the grain in that many young viewers are seeking a version of comfort TV, given the popularity of reruns of "George Lopez" and "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air," said Brian Graden, MTV's entertainment president.

Among MTV's other new shows will be "The Buried Life," with four men trying to cross out items on a young person's version of a bucket list; "Gone Too Far," an intervention series for addicts; and "Disaster Date," a hidden camera show about people set up on awful blind dates by their friends.

A fashion blog leads to the Paris runway

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- One of the newest designers for surf and skate label RVCA doesn't have a design degree, many fashion internships on her resume or even a wealth of sewing experience. What she does have is a little unconventional: a Web site, featuring pictures of her daily outfits, that happens to draw more than a million hits a month.

For a few years now, fashion bloggers have drawn legions of devoted readers to their sites simply by posting regular examples of how they style their clothes. Now they're starting to leverage that popularity into lucrative careers -- and a gateway into the industry.

Rumi Neely launched fashiontoast.com in late 2007 after visitors to her eBay (EBAY, Fortune 500) vintage store wouldn't stop asking what shoes she was wearing in her pictures. A year and change later, she gets 35,000 hits a day and hundreds of comments per post.

Her notoriety has helped the store -- recent pieces have sold for upward of $200 -- but has also led to more: as the Internet took notice of her blog, designers and industry heavyweights did, too.

Neely was invited for a private tour of the American Apparel (APP) factory, then to New York Fashion Week in fall 2008 to see Alexander Wang's show and model Erin Wasson's line for RVCA.

Then, in December, she got an email from Esteban Cortazar, the designer for Emanel Ungaro, "just to say hi, and saying that he loved my blog and he found it really inspiring," she said. "I was just completely stunned that someone in that kind of position was reading my blog."

That culminated in a March trip to Paris and a front-row seat to the Ungaro show, in a dress from the line that Cortazar personally fitted for her.

Neely, who lives in San Diego and majored in political science, has designed a dress and a tank top for RVCA, modeled for the line's fall look book and ad campaign and signed with NEXT Model Management. She's thinking about a career in styling, she said.

Other bloggers are also using their sites to launch their own careers: a few are writing books, and in January three popular posters to fashion community chictopia.com were selected to style themselves and model in an American Apparel Internet ad campaign.

Six months after New York-based Alexandra Sinderbrand began posting to cheapJAP.com, a producer contacted her about filming a television show.

The show will mirror her site's philosophy, teaching girls used to living off their parents' credit cards to shop creatively at thrift stores. A production company is currently editing the raw footage into network pitches, Sinderbrand said. She's working on a book proposal and eventually wants to expand her blog into a brand, complete with a brick-and-mortar resale boutique.

Sinderbrand had worked in fashion public relations and tried to break into the magazine industry, but "I always wanted to write -- and make money from it," she said.

And bloggers aren't the only ones capitalizing on the strength of their sartorial personalities.

The recession had already set in when designer Francesca Sloan moved to Pittsburgh from Philadelphia last summer, leaving behind her boutique and moving her business online-only. She opened a store on etsy.com but worried about how she'd draw new customers without a storefront or steady stream of local press.

Then she began sending her jodhpurs and jumpsuits to bloggers like Seaofshoes.com's Jane Aldridge, a Texas teenager who counts Kanye West among her fans and is working on her own shoe line.

"I didn't know what was going to happen with the economy, so it was just something where I had to think about risk and what kind of loss I was going to take a risk with," Sloan explained. "So I thought, what female does not want free clothing?"

The bloggers, in turn, featured her items on their sites, and sales exploded: Sloan sold 600 pieces in the next five weeks, compared to 120 in the five months preceding, and has been approached by stores across America who spotted her items on the blogs and are looking to carry her line, she said.

"It's crazy how much power these girls have," Sloan said. "My friend is a jewelry designer, and she will spend thousands of dollars on an ad, and her ads won't hit like this."

Some bloggers don't plan to turn their fame into long-term careers: Amherst senior Melissa Atmadja, one of the chictopia posters featured in American Apparel's campaign, said she'll be a featured blogger on a new fashion community but still plans to apply to medical school.

For Rumi Neely, what looks to be a bright future in fashion will owe much to fashiontoast's success.

"I think a lot of industry people are actually reading blogs to get ideas of what's going on with real people out there -- that's probably the best way to do that kind of market research," she said. "Even commercial companies have e-mailed me, and I've had different proposals about how we can work together."

Rappers tone down sparkle but not swagger

ATLANTA – The hip-hop world is a less bling-bling place these days.
The music genre has been defined as much by diamond-encrusted watches and platinum chains as its gritty urban lyrics. But in the last couple of years, it has scaled down its flash, a trend insiders say has become more pronounced during the recent recession.
Make no mistake: The industry that made an urban household name out of New York's Jacob "Jacob the Jeweler" Arabov me isn't entirely reversing course. (Case in point — Lil Wayne's "A Milli," one of last year's biggest songs, which had the rapper bragging wildly about being a "young millionaire.")
But "the day of conspicuous consumption is gone," says Tamara Connor, an Atlanta-based stylist who has created looks for chart-topping rappers, including Lil Wayne.
"We're still going to see some bling, but it's just not going to be as much," Connor says. "Instead of four diamond necklaces, it might just be a diamond bracelet — and it's a piece the celebrity wears all the time. They're not changing their jewelry out everyday."
Photo shoots, for example, are being done with fewer of the specialized medallions considered a calling card for the likes of Rick Ross, whose chain with a likeness of his head — complete with black diamond beard — has an estimated value of $30,000.
Instead you might see a rapper in an off-the-shelf diamond cross or wearing lower-quality stones. "You can save $3,000 a carat if you do non-ring quality diamonds for studs (earrings)," Connor notes.
Ben Baller, head of Los Angeles-based jeweler I.F. & Co., says the shift is most pronounced among up-and-coming rappers, for whom a steady income is seeming like less of a sure thing. Rap sales have declined along with the rest of the music industry.
Before, a new artist might spend $25,000 of a $30,000 advance on a chain, according to Baller, who counts Fat Joe as a client.
"Now they would rather try to spend $5,000 and $6,000," he says, adding, "they're willing to talk about options by using sapphires, using very, very low quality gold.
"Some people (are) even wanting to mix diamonds with cubics (cubic zirconia) so it would not be completely ungenuine."
Cost cutting is major for the industry in which the carat-weight of one's ring could carry more cache than record sales. Ostentatious fashion has been in hip-hop's DNA since Slick Rick donned layers of opulent gold chains in the '80s.
The flash reflected the music style born of the streets of New York, its stars often hard-knock kids who christened their new success with thick rope chains and designer sweatsuits.
While over-the-top bling didn't represent all of rap fashion — gritty gang looks, Afrocentric garb and even preppy styles have all been adopted and embraced as part of rap style at some point — in the late 1990s and the early part of this decade, bling seemed to have reached its apex, complete with gold and diamond pimp cups and diamond grills for the teeth. (In fact, its around that time the term bling was born.)
"It was about creating a signature," according to Memsor Kamarake, fashion director of Vibe magazine.
But in recent years, rap kings like Jay-Z and Diddy have displayed their swagger with looks that were more boardroom than bling, with button-down shirts and designer suits.
Though Young Jeezy may still sport a huge chain at times, flashy jewelry is not integral to his image.
"He'll wear a scarf and no jewelry, maybe a bracelet, with a baseball hat, a T-shirt and a pair of jeans — that's not a lot of bling," says Connor, who has also styled the Georgia artist.
Rappers aren't giving up glamour altogether, they're just not wearing it 24-7. In the past, several chains were de rigueur for a grocery-store run, now they're reserved for a show or nightclub, says Baller, who also is seeing more artists trading in old chains instead of buying new ones.
And rapper T.I. has the A.K.O.O. clothing line, which features military-inspired woven shirts, polos and denim, with most items ranging from $44 to about $200. Ralph Reynolds, who is A.K.O.O.'s creative director, said the clothing label reflects a more price-conscious customer in hip-hop.
"Some of those same people who would reach and stretch and do everything they could to get that Louis (Vuitton) will now say, 'I already have these two bags, let me pay the rent,'" Reynolds says.
Even Kimora Lee Simmons, the Baby Phat designer known for her extravagant lifestyle, toned down the glitter in her most recent collection.
"Fabulosity is not — the girls are seeing — that $5,000 pair of shoes," she says.

Daniel Swarovski Collection Celebrates 20 Years of Couture

New York – The Daniel Swarovski collection - the high-end couture collection of Swarovski accessories generally found adorning celebrities on the red carpet - celebrates its 20th anniversary this year, and with that come 20 new bag designs and 20 new pieces of jewelry to commemorate the brand's history.
Rather than reviving accessories from the archives, Swarovski artistic director Nathalie Colin chose to highlight how far their crystal technology has come with innovative applications of the famed crystals, from crystals applied to precious stones and pearls to exotic skins. The processes add up to spectacular-looking pieces with blinding luminosity. Bling is definitely not out - it's just made out of crystals now, instead of diamonds.
This season, 1920's art deco design inspired the look and feel of the pieces, from the vintage-looking styles of the delicate evening bags to the deco patterns used for the crystal settings. And in a nod to the changing demands of red carpet walking clients, the bags are now slightly larger to accommodate their number one purse accessory: the Blackberry.
Also new for Swarovski this year is an expanded watch collection, with high quality Swiss-made timepieces at the core of the new designs. For women, styles range from a crystal cuff, the "D:Light," with a time display made up of crystals that light up only when a button is pressed ($1,500-$1,7000), to edgier styles like a wrap-around leather band ($575) or classic timepieces with a metal watchband and subtle crystal bezel ($650-$750).
Swarovski's signature jewelry collection for autumn/winter 2009/10, "Nature Reloaded," follows the nature-oriented theme started for spring with "Super Nature." For this collection, Swarovski took a trip to an enchanted forest with wooden pendants embedded with crystals, to mushroom-shaped charms to smoky hues of plum, forest green and black crystal. Other key looks include serpent bangles and necklaces and Swarovski's unofficial mascot characters, Erika and Elvis, re-imagined as a butterfly and a bumblebee, respectively.

Gorgeous Stars at the "Grey Gardens" Premiere

Los Angeles – If all you knew about Jessica Lange and Drew Barrymore was what you see in their new HBO film "Grey Gardens," you would never believe the glamorous pair that hit the red carpet at Grauman's Chinese Theater on Thursday night, April 16. For the duo star as what HBO executive Len Amato called "the most amazing mother-daughter pairing you will ever see," as real-life weirdoes Edith and "Little" Edie Bouvier Beale, the aunt and cousin of Jackie Kennedy who gained fame in the 1970's in a documentary of the same name.

That poverty-stricken pair lived on a ramshackle beachfront estate in East Hampton, N.Y., surrounded by countless cats and piles of garbage, ate cat food to survive, and eventually became cult heroes because of that documentary. With the help of plenty of prosthetic makeup and some very shabby clothes, Barrymore and Lange are definitely transformed for the worse in the film.

"Our goal was to disappear into the characters, and not be seen as ourselves," Barrymore explained, and the thunderous applause that filled the theater as the credits rolled proved that they had succeeded.

The dynamic duo looked fabulous on the red carpet. Drew, with hair teased high in a Sixties-inspired style, wearing a full-length white gown with a jeweled breastplate and gigantic turquoise jewelry to match, and Jessica a bit more demure, and also in a white top and embellished skirt. They were joined by co-stars Daniel Baldwin and Ken Howard, writer-director Michael Sucsy, and friends Ali Larter, Lisa Kudrow, Jennie Garth, and Cameron Diaz, who avoided the red carpet but snuck into the after party to congratulate Drew.

"Grey Gardens" begins airing on HBO on Saturday, April 18.

Presenting a perfect package of jewellery and hand crafted bags, belts and shoes, Malini Agarwalla of Malaga gave several stylish options for the coming season. The two leather collections were Armoria and Tribula; the former was an Egyptian inspiration where emblems and badges created magical bags and wide belts which were teamed beautifully with shoes and semiprecious stone jewellery. Tribula the second collection had the Tibetan theme which was beautifully translated into the bags, shoes and jewellery. Completely coordinated, the look of the bags, shoes and jewellery was a feast for the eyes and the collections were imaginatively designed for formal wear.

Michael Jackson auction called off: official

LOS ANGELES (AFP) – A huge sale of items belonging to former "King of Pop" Michael Jackson due to take place next week has been cancelled, the auction house organizing the sell-off confirmed.
Martin Nolan, executive director of Julien's Auctions, told AFP that the hotly anticipated sale had been scrapped after a settlement had been reached with the eccentric pop star's legal team.
Jackson's management company had been attempting to halt the April 22-25 auction despite earlier approving the sale and co-operating with Julien's.
"I can tell you that both parties today agreed not to move forward with the auction on April 22," Nolan told AFP. "The collection will stay together to be returned to Michael Jackson and MJJ Productions."
The terms of the settlement were not disclosed but Nolan said both parties were happy with the deal.
More than 1,300 items -- including a customized Rolls Royce limousine and dozens of Jackson's concert costumes -- had been due to go under the hammer in Beverly Hills in an auction expected to raise millions.
Items up for sale had been taken from Jackson's sprawling Neverland Ranch in California, which the singer left and has never returned to following his acquittal on child abuse charges in 2005.
All the auction lots were on display Tuesday at a public exhibition ahead of the sale which had sparked worldwide interest from memorabilia collectors and Jackson fans.
Jackson's production company MJJ Productions had contracted Julien's to arrange an auction of Neverland items last year before suddenly seeking to halt the sale in a lawsuit filed in Los Angeles last month.
A judge said the sale could ahead at a hearing on April 3, although Jackson's lawyers had been due to argue for an injunction at a further hearing scheduled for Wednesday in Los Angeles.
Nolan said he believed that the reaction of Jackson's fans following news of the auction had made the singer think twice about going ahead with the sale.
"There was such a sentimental reaction from fans all over the world about the dispersal of the collection from Neverland that it made Michael aware of the level of the loyalty of the fans," Nolan told AFP.
Nolan said while he expected prospective buyers would be disappointed by the cancellation "there's going to be rejoicing as well because at the end of the day there was a touch of sadness about the dispersal of Neverland."
"But now it's going to stay together and there will eventually be a permanent museum," he said. Nolan would not speculate on where any future Jackson museum was likely to be placed.
Jackson, who dominated the pop world with hit albums like "Thriller" and "Bad" in the 1980s, has virtually vanished from public view since being cleared at his "Trial of the Century" in California four years ago.
Jackson is currently preparing for a series of comeback concerts in London in July. Tickets sold out within hours when they went on sale.

Recession-Proof Wedding at Vera Wang

New York – A bride-to-be might worry for months about making her wedding day perfect, and that includes finding the ultimate dress. But flash forward to the end of the night on her wedding day, to the champagne soaked floors, disheveled hair and a crinkled dress - yet she's still looking radiant - and you see that there's a real case to be made for imperfection.
A not-so-perfect, artfully mismatched look was the theme of Vera Wang's Spring 2010 bridal collection, which she presented in her New York showroom on Wednesday, April 8.
Wang's wedding gowns mixed and matched fabrics like silk with asymmetrically draped tulle, added mismatched bows tied in all different directions and tacked together sweeping mille-feuille layers, turning the back of one ball gown into a walking cross-section of the Grand Canyon. "Mixed-media" as Wang put it.
"It's as though they were tossed in a washing machine," said Wang, and then, one imagines, were tumble dried. "They're youthful and more organic than most gowns," she said.
Asymmetrical draping of effervescent clouds of tulle layered with hand-painted silk made these gowns both fragile and substantial - there's an intense level of design and couture-like finishing, yet a lightness and sense of dynamism. These dresses have movement and feel completely fresh. Part of this is due to the way they were constructed, using lighter bodices on the inside, and then building the dresses onto those "tubes."
Wang understands that not all her customers want a dramatic look for a wedding-as-fashion-shoot type of event. "There are gowns that satisfy the more informal wedding," said Wang, pointing to a slender, delicate silk charmeuse bias-draped gown with a more sparing use of mille-feuille as a ruffled accent near the bottom of a flared skirt. "You really have to wardrobe them for specific locations."
A fashionable bride getting married in a garden, for instance, might appreciate the spring green and lavender ball gown, as though she were sprouting from the earth as one the season's first crocuses.
"Especially with the recession, I wanted the dresses to stand for more," said Wang.
Next year would seem to be the ideal year to get married, if a Vera Wang wedding gown is what you have your eye on. She's lowered her median price point 30 to 40 percent, from $5,500 to $3,800. "There are 10 gowns at the $3,800 level," she said.
Wang calls it "demi-couture." While Wang has worked with her team to get the prices down, none of the quality has been sacrificed. Each gown has a highly artistic feel. "They're not easy to duplicate," she said, "but we'll get it down."

Fiona Sit and Jaycee Chan’s new roles as lovers again

Fiona Sit held an autograph-signing session yesterday for her “Last Smile, First Tear” DVD with cast members, Joey Leung and Edmund Tong. She told reporters that she would be making a film with Jaycee Chan, playing the role as his girlfriend. The reporter asked her if she was worried about the people speculating that they are dating again. Fiona said, “I am not worried. I don’t want to turn down this job just because of the rumors. Professional artists won’t let their emotions influence their work ethics. The script is not out yet. I hope people don’t take the word “lovers” on face value and concentrate too much on rumors.”
window.google_render_ad();
The quality of the first batch of DVDs was not very good and the company invested more to produce a second batch with better quality. For those people who had bought the first batch, they were able to exchange it for the second batch, free of charge. Fiona was very impressed with the way the company had handled this matter. She said, “I don’t know if the company loses any money. The company is like an artist.” Reporters asked her if she has given a DVD to Jaychee, and she replied straight away, “No.”

Fairy Tale Fantasy at Reem Acra Bridal

New York – "Light, airy and happy" and "approachable fantasy" was how Reem Acra described the mood of her fairy tale-inspired Spring 2010 bridal collection, which she presented in New York on Sunday, April 5.
No matter what dream wedding gown that a young girl might have dreamt of wearing one day, Acra covered all the bases with her take on the gowns of princesses in fairy tales.
A romantic tulle gown that opened the show featured vertically placed strips of beading that formed gathers, reining in the fluffy volume of the tulle the way an ornate necklace might if worn with a simple white shirt. Another gown featured more sparsely placed beading that resembled a spray of stars.
Beyond embellishment, Acra also innovated the way she constructed other gowns. A tier gown made a leap from the traditional ruffles with asymmetrically draped layers that fell over carefully placed beading, while a silk satin ball gown swirled and twisted around the body with sophisticated origami pleating.
But the two gowns that closed the show got the biggest audience response, and were the most unusual designs in the mix. One, a pale blue satin faced organza ball gown that seemed to float in mid-air featured a gold screenprinted design, a mode of embellishment not usually associated with bridal gowns. Acra's final gown took screenprinting to the next level with gold laser cut patterns all over the otherwise traditional ivory ball gown.
"I had been dreaming about doing it for a few years," said Acra. "So I wanted to do everything that I had dreamed about."
Anticipating tighter budgets for couture-level gowns in the coming year, she added: "There's something for all my brides, for all the different price levels. There's something that everyone can afford."

Badgley Mischka Bride, Timeless and Timely

New York – The bridal gowns of Badgley Mischka, a celebrity and socialite wedding favorite - Kristen Davis in "Sex and the City" even wore a Badgley Mischka gown for her character Charlotte's second wedding - may be an investment, but they are the type of gowns that granddaughters may find themselves wearing one day.
The Badgley Mischka Bride collection for Fall 2009, presented in New York on Sunday, April 5, featured eight timeless, understated styles, from a vintage-feel Champagne-colored trumpet gown overlaid with lace to a minimally embellished strapless gown of frothy pearl-colored organza dress with diagonally placed ruffles along the trumpet skirt.
The ball gowns were also in keeping with the duo's downplay of elaborate embellishment this season that made Badgley Mischka's gowns famous in the past. Instead, a full silk taffeta gown limited beading to the neckline, waist and dropped waist. The effect was no less powerful, letting the romantic volume of the dress be the stand-out feature.
For a bride looking for something less traditional, a dress that featured a skirt of torn silk chiffon layers should be a gown in the running for the punk rock princess. Badgley Mischka also focused on sexy necklines, whether a V or scoop neck dress with spaghetti straps. In other words, timeless need not mean conservative or dull.
