How Have 'Sherlock Holmes' 'Alvin and the Chipmunks' and 'Mission: Impossible' Changed?

Tomorrow marks the release of three undoubtedly big Hollywood movies: Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows,Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chip-wrecked, and the IMAX experience of Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol. What makes us so confident that they’ll be hits? Simply, these films are all things that we have seen, and loved, in the past.

And I’m not just referring to the fact that they are, respectively, a sequel, threequel and fourquel. The characters and stories in all three of these new movies have existed long prior to the creation of their current film series. Whether it be from previous movies, television shows, literature or Christmas albums, most of us have had some knowledge and attachment to Sherlock Holmes, Alvin and the Chipmunks and the IMF team for many years now.

Of course, just because the stories and characters are familiar, it doesn’t mean they are identical to their past incarnations. We’ve decided to keep the older manifestations of Arthur Conan Doyle’s brilliant detective, the triad of singing rodents, and the superspy IMF agency in mind when looking at these new movies, to consider what they may have left out, kept in, and added to the mix.

Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows

The Old Movies

What They Kept: The unflappable genius detective thing, equipped with an inseparable partnership with Dr. John Watson. The framework is all the same: the duo would solve a mystery or two (against all odds), defeating the evil Moriarty or some other criminal who forgot to double-check his work.

What They Changed: Basil Rathbone, who is the actor most synonymous with Sherlock Holmes (he played him in fourteen feature films) embodied the character as a proper, sophisticated and elegant gentleman—this is the sort of image that enveloped the character prior to his revival in Guy Ritchie’s adaptations, which star Robert Downey, Jr., as a more rogue, ruffian character. Additionally, Jude Law's Dr. Watson is a much more competant figure than the character the old movies chose to portray.

The Books

What They Kept: A lot, as a matter of fact. Guy Ritchie’s adaptation is considered a lot more faithful to Doyle’s stories than a lot of the films prior. Doyle created Holmes as an ingenious but rough fellow, who enjoyed bareknuckle boxing and a fancy cocaine addiction. Law's Watson is a lot closer to the literary version of the fellow than the old cinematic version.

What They Changed: In fairness, Holmes doesn’t explicitly do any drugs in the Ritchie adaptation…it’s just kind of hinted at.

Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chip-wrecked

The Music Sensation

What They Kept: The basic characters created in the 1950s for the purposes of a novelty record have pretty much maintained their identities. Alvin was always a misbehaving brat, Simon was always an uptight nerd and Theodore was always also there.

What They Changed: They used to sing their own original songs. Creator Ross Bagdasarian wrote well-known Chipmunkian classics such as “Witch Doctor” and the Christmas song about a hula hoop. I’d personally rather hear either of those than a Chipmunk rendition of “Bad Romance.” Plus—the look. Art design for the novelty records depicted the chipmunks as actual chipmunks.

The Cartoon Series

What They Kept: This is likely where a lot of us today developed our images of the Chipmunks. The 1980s cartoon series introduced the Chipettes and really fleshed out the characters’ lifestyles as a popular music troupe/unorthodox suburban family. Plus—the look. The new movies resemble the design of the cartoon characters far more than the original images, although…

What They Changed: They’re a lot smaller now. In the cartoon, the Chipmunks stood two feet tall, at the very least. Now, they’re down to the size of an actual tree rodent, give or take. But what bothers me more than any of that: what happened to Alvin’s hat? He hardly wears it anymore!

Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol

The TV Series

What They Kept: The theme song. Seriously, they could change anything else and it wouldn’t matter—the mood would be retained. Name another show with as iconic a theme song as Mission: Impossible. The theme song instilled the original show with the unforgettable excitement that has carried over into a colossal movie series.

What They Changed: The characters’ roles have been revamped to appeal to the “modern world” (the film series was pioneered before the wave of nostalgia overtook Hollywood—one might imagine some more similarities had the first installment been attempted just this year). The star of the TV show was Jim Phelps, played then by Peter Graves and in 1996’s Mission: Impossible by Jon Voight. But in the film series, the real star is agent-on-the-rise Ethan Hunt, played by Tom Cruise. Understandable, as modern audiences are generally partial to younger characters. Another understandable move: replacing the old Cold War overtones with more contemporary themes, like the threat of terrorism.

There are a good deal of things in each of these films that sharp fans of the original incarnations might find fault with. On the other hand, sometimes new developments are necessary to keep the stories and characters interesting in changing times. However you feel about the modern views of Holmes, the Chipmunks and the IMF, one thing is for certain: people are still, and probably always will be, excited to have them back in their lives.

Vidya was born in Palghat, Kerala, India. Her family consists of her dad, P.R. Balan, who is the Vice-President of ETC Channel; mom - a home-maker, and an elder sister, Priya, who is married to Kedar. She also has an aunt by the name of Raji Raju.

The Balan family re-located to live at Road No. 11, near Ambedkar Garden, Chembur, Bombay, when Vidya was very young. Local actor T. Max Graham dies

T. Max Graham, one of Kansas City’s most popular actors, died Thursday after a struggle with cancer.

Graham, who once told The Star that he was raised on a farm in eastern Jackson County and hit the road as a kitchen-gadget salesman after high school, was a character actor who excelled at comedy but could handle dramatic roles.

He once said he began his career in San Francisco in 1968.

Graham also spent time in Los Angeles in the late ’60s and ’70s and made his film debut in “Angel Unchained,” a 1970 biker film in which he played a gang member named Magician. He was credited as Neil Moran, his real name. He portrayed the factory manager in David Lynch’s feature film, “Eraserhead.”

It was after he settled in Kansas City in the 1980s that he came into his own. He performed at most of the professional theaters in town but became a local star appearing in comedies at the city’s two dinner theaters at the time — Tiffany’s Attic and the Waldo Astoria. Often he was paired with Vicki Oleson, a gifted comedienne whose small physical stature stood in sharp contrast to Graham’s beefy appearance.

Even after relocating here, Graham worked in feature films, miniseries and TV movies, often playing sheriffs and police chiefs. He played a preacher with a large appetite in director Ang Lee’s 1999 border-war epic, “Ride With the Devil,” which was shot on locations in the Kansas City region.

In recent years Graham was able to show off his dramatic abilities. In 2009, for example, he played the title role in “Galileo,” about the astronomer persecuted by the church for his contention that the Earth was not the center of the universe.

Dennis Hennessy, co-owner of the New Theatre, said there was a time when Graham’s name helped sell out shows.

“Max was really one of a kind,” he said. “In the good old days of Tiffany’s Attic, he was a headliner. People would come just to see him.”

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Speaks Suburban Chapel, near 39th Street and Missouri 291 in Independence. The service will be there at 10 a.m. Thursday.

Industry invites dry up as the President shuns glitz and preps for a populist campaign. Like every Democrat, President Barack Obama covets Hollywood's financial support. But there's a growing sense that he doesn't want to be seen with industry figures.

A source close to the White House tells The Hollywood Reporter it was no accident stars were absent from an Oct. 13 state dinner for Korean president Lee Myung-bak. Industry attendees included only American Beauty producer Bruce Cohen and the evening's performers, the Ahn Trio sisters and singer Janelle Monae.

Celebrities have long been a fixture at White House gatherings. Obama's previous state dinners have included such A-listers as Steven Spielberg, Barbra Streisand, David Geffen and Jeffrey Katzenberg.

But Obama might want to put visual distance between himself and boldface names. Facing a close race, strategists might want to head off allegations that he is starstruck, as GOP candidate John McCain portrayed him in 2008 ads.

Angelina Jolie set for bigger job with UN agency to help 'the most resilient people in the world'

Angelina Jolie is in talks about a new and expanded role with the UN refugee agency for which she already serves as goodwill ambassador.

The actress said that she and the agency are still studying their options and working out the details for her to deal with refugee crises, but haven't settled on anything because they want to get it right.

"We are looking at a few countries in the world," Jolie told reporters.

"We're hoping to discuss it in the next few weeks but we want to research it properly and do it well."

Jolie is a globe-trotting goodwill ambassador for the UN refugee agency, visiting dozens of countries during her 10 years in the job.

She also has served informally on occasion as a special envoy for UN High Commissioner for Refugees Antonio Guterres.

Guterres told the agency's executive committee in Geneva on Tuesday that the actress could serve as his special envoy "to mobilise strong international support" during particularly dire situations.

Among the possibilities under discussion are a new role as special envoy on the refugee crisis affecting Afghans fleeing for Pakistan and Iran. Pakistan and Iran host some 2.7 million Afghan refugees.

Jolie told diplomats and officials with the refugee agency that her work for them has been "moving, sometimes heartbreaking, but always rewarding, and unforgettable".

She described the refuges she has met as "the most vulnerable people in the world, and they are also the most resilient people in the world.

"Refugees are survivors, they are mothers and daughters and fathers and sons, they are all extraordinary people who have a remarkable story that tells of strength in the face of great loss," Jolie said. "They need our help more than ever."

She said she hoped increasing budget constraints among UN donor nations would not prevent them from continuing to open their wallets to the world's most vulnerable.

TMZ broke the story ... an undisclosed private party has offered to buy all rights to the XXX flick from Vivid honcho Steve Hirsch -- which he told TMZ is worth at least $30 million. The buyer indicated he (though we're guessing it's a she) wanted to take the video off the market.

TMZ has obtained a letter from Ray J's lawyer to Hirsch, in which the attorney makes it clear ... Ray J has partial copyright ownership in the video and "any attempts to transfer the copyright outside of these parameters will result in filing a motion with the courts to seek an injunction of any sale until Ray J's rights are protected." Translation -- he wants some serious cash.

The letter also says the video has been a pain in the ass for Ray J: "... my client rarely has a conversation with industry professionals where the Tape has not been mentioned or questioned ... no amount of money can relieve him from this nightmare." The lawyer didn't mention how much money Ray J has already made from the video.

As for Kim's financial interest in the tape ... no one is talking, but the video has made untold millions, and Kim is a smart businesswoman. We're just sayin'...

An old soul is the last thing you would expect to find inside Justin Bieber. But all it takes is one listen to the 17 year-old soul-singing phenomenon to realize that he is light years ahead of his manufactured pop peers.

After posting dozens of homemade videos on YouTube in 2007, where the multi-talented Bieber put his impeccable spin on songs from artists like Usher, Ne-Yo and Stevie Wonder, Justin racked up over 10,000,000 views purely from word of mouth.

"I started singing about three years ago," says the Canadian native who grew up an only child in Stratford, Ontario. "I entered a local singing competition called Stratford Idol. The other people in the competition had been taking singing lessons and had vocal coaches. I wasn't taking it too seriously at the time, I would just sing around the house. I was only 12 and I got second place."

In an effort to share his victory with his loved ones, Justin began posting his performance footage online. "I put my singing videos from the competition on YouTube so that my friends and family could watch them," he says. "But it turned out that other people liked them and they started subscribing to them. That's how my manager found me. He saw me on YouTube and contacted my family and now I'm signed!"

Seven months after Justin started posting his videos online, former So So Def marketing executive Scooter Braun flew the then 13-year old singer to Atlanta, GA to meet with his elite colleagues. As if Justin's natural singing talent wasn't enough to impress Scooter's inner circle, Braun knew Bieber was also a self-taught musician who plays the drums, guitar, piano and trumpet.

"Right when we flew into Atlanta, Scooter drove us to the studio and Usher was there in the parking lot," remembers Bieber. "That was my first time ever being out of Canada so I went up to him and was like, 'Hey Usher, I love your songs, do you want me to sing you one?' He was like, 'No little buddy, just come inside, it's cold out.'"

He had L.A. Reid backing him up and Scooter had a lot of really good connections in Atlanta. I always tease Usher now and remind him he how he blew me off the first time we met."
